Chess victory in Rustenburg for RHS stars

Randfontein High School’s chess team returned home with pride after the Clash of Schools Chess Tournament, bringing back a gold medal, a bronze medal, and several individual Board Prize wins.

Randfontein High School (RHS) chess players made their mark in Rustenburg at the Clash of Schools Chess Tournament, securing the highest number of Board Prize winners and adding more medals to their collection.

Coach Fernando Nyirenda explained on August 2 that the school returned to the tournament after their champion team’s victory last year. This year they entered two teams – one in the U17 section and another in the championship section – to defend their title.

Each team consisted of seven players. The U17 team were crowned gold medallists, while the championship team finished third and took home bronze.

Fernando said the school stood out not only as a team, but through individual performances too. The Board Prize winners were Molosiwa Kgotatso, Udodi Ebube, Mbasane David, Shomolekae Didintle and Morobe Nhlakanipho Thato.

“Your focus, consistency and fighting spirit truly set you apart!” Fernando said of their performances.

On August 9, the players competed again in the Alexander Forbes Battle of the Board Online Chess Finals.

“This event has grown in significance since its inception last year, where RHS won first place across Gauteng, and we returned with high hopes of defending our title again,” Fernando said.

He expressed gratitude to those who support the team.

“A heartfelt thank you to all our parents and supporters who continue to stand behind our chess family. Your encouragement makes all the difference.

“To all our players, your dedication, discipline and relentless pursuit of excellence are deeply admired. Whether you brought home a medal or played your heart out for your team, know that you have made Randfontein High School immensely proud. Keep your heads high and your minds sharp; the board is your battlefield, and you continue to inspire us all. Always keep in mind that the best is never behind, it’s always ahead.”
