The Randfontein High School (RHS) Chess Team made the school and community proud after qualifying for the prestigious 2026 Alexander Forbes Battle Boards Chess Championship’s National Top 16.

The team secured their place in the national finals during the qualifying rounds held in Sandton on August 1. In a remarkable achievement, RHS was the only school from Gauteng to qualify for the national stage, where they will compete for the National Championship title on August 15.

The accomplishment reflects the learners’ dedication, discipline and perseverance throughout the season. Their commitment to the game, combined with countless hours of preparation, has earned them a place among South Africa’s top 16 school chess teams.

The school also expressed its gratitude to the team’s coach for their unwavering commitment and guidance, as well as to the educators and staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to support the players. Their collective efforts ensured the learners had every opportunity to compete at the highest level.

As the team prepares for the finals, the Randfontein community is rallying behind them and wishing them every success as they take on the country’s top schools in pursuit of the national championship.
