Happy school reunion turns into an act of kindness for those in need

Former learners of Randfontein Primary School support those in need with a donation to the school’s feeding scheme.

Former learners of Randfontein Primary School recently revisited their alma mater while making a difference in the lives of current learners.

Zarel Herbst, one of the former learners, explained that they organised the reunion after reconnecting through a WhatsApp group started mid-last year to reach classmates from 1995. Having not seen each other in years, they decided to host their first get-together.

“It was so nice to be back at the school, as I had so many fond memories of all the fun we had as children, including the fun on the field, the singing in assembly and all the school outings that were arranged. I liked all the teachers; they were so attentive and friendly. It almost seemed like one big happy family. Returning after all these years, I was pleasantly surprised at how good the school looks, so well kept and the nice upgrades that they have done,” said Zarel.

They have also made plans to meet again before the end of the year. Zarel thanked everyone who helped make the day possible, including the current principal, Greg Boatard.

During the reunion, the group raised about R8 500, which they donated to the school’s feeding scheme.

“We felt that it would be nice to give back to the school. At first, we thought we could paint a classroom together, but after hearing about all the children they need to feed, it seemed best to provide funds directly towards the scheme. I remember all those years ago, if you didn’t have something to eat, the school would provide, and it was so welcome. We had a lot fewer learners in those days, so I can imagine it is not easy supporting the children whose parents are struggling to provide a meal for them at school,” he said.

He expressed hope that their gesture would inspire others to help where they can.
