FJL Wells learners lead the way in mental health awareness initiative

Four learners took a proactive stand on mental health this June, inviting wellness experts to educate and empower their peers.

Four learners from FJL Wells Primary School’s Youth Citizen Action Programme (YCAP) marked Mental Health Awareness Month with an impactful and educational initiative.

On June 17, the learners, Kitso Ragopane, Michael Aisam, Mpho Nkosi, and Katlego Abrahams, promoted emotional well-being among their peers and, as part of the programme, invited wellness practitioners from Didi Wellness to engage with the school community and provide valuable insights into mental health.

The session focused on helping learners understand the importance of mental well-being, how to manage stress, and how to recognise when they or others may need support.

The initiative formed part of YCAP’s broader goal of empowering learners to take active roles in addressing social issues within their communities. By focusing on mental health, the learners demonstrated awareness of a critical issue affecting young people today.

Programme mentor Simangele Nombila praised the learners for their initiative, noting that conversations around mental health are essential in creating a supportive and inclusive school environment.

The event not only raised awareness but also helped break the stigma often associated with mental health challenges, encouraging learners to prioritise their well-being and support one another.

The learners also took their message to the airwaves later on in the day, when they were interviewed on the local community radio station Westside FM about their event.

Through initiatives like these, FJL Wells Primary continues to nurture socially responsible and compassionate young leaders who are committed to making a positive difference in their community.
