Westgold outreach initiative promotes literacy and compassion

Westgold Primary learners brought smiles, encouragement and the gift of reading to children in Mohlakeng through a heartwarming outreach initiative.

The Soul Buddyz Club from Westgold Primary School recently visited the St John the Divine Orphans and Outreach Centre in Mohlakeng as part of a special outreach initiative to make a positive difference in children’s lives.

The club was represented by dedicated facilitators Shaun Ngobeni, Robert Mjikwa, Vincent Sere and Xolani Themba, who organised and facilitated the programme.

According to school spokesperson Mariska du Plessis, learners and facilitators spent meaningful time with the children, sharing words of encouragement and donating books to help promote literacy and a love for reading.

“The donated books will help strengthen the centre’s educational resources and provide children with greater access to reading material that can support their academic development and personal growth,” she said.

The centre’s co-ordinator, *Patricia Marite, further expressed her heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped make the initiative possible.

“A special word of thanks goes to the new community library for the generous donation of books. Your contribution has helped create opportunities for learning, growth and hope for many children,” she said.

*Tracy-Leigh van Wyk, co-ordinator of the Soul Buddyz Club, and her team remain committed to promoting literacy, compassion, community service and social responsibility through projects that uplift and empower others.

“Together, we can change lives one book, one child and one act of kindness at a time,” she concluded.

*This article has been amended since publication. An earlier version incorrectly identified the centre’s co-ordinator as Tracy-Leigh van Wyk. The school’s spokesperson has since clarified to the Herald that this information was provided in error. She confirmed that Tracy-Leigh van Wyk is the co-ordinator of the school’s Soul Buddyz Club, while Patricia Marite is the co-ordinator of St John the Divine Orphans and Outreach Centre. The article has been updated accordingly to reflect the correct information. — Ed.
