Local council stealing millions from ratepayers
If refuse is not removed, for whatever reason, RLM should credit these household and business accounts.
• DA West Rand Constituency Chairperson Jacques Julius writes….
During the past weeks, we have experienced non-delivery of services by Randfontein Local Municipality (especially in Toekomsrus) in respect of refuse removal amongst other things. Ratepayers are charged R84 per month for refuse removal per household.
In total, over R4 mil. is paid per month by ratepayers to the RLM for refuse removal.
If refuse is not removed, for whatever reason, RLM should credit these household and business accounts. I feel that if this money is not paid back to the ratepayers, it can be seen as stealing from the residents.
You pay for services and you expect that this service should be rendered. On the flipside of this, if residents owe money to the Municipality they are very swift in switching off a person`s electricity supply.
The effects of not removing refuse in time are severe.
There are health risks and people will dump their waste in front of other people’s properties.
In the longer term, businesses will get tired of this state of affairs and move to other towns in search of better services.
The effect of this is that people will stand to loose their jobs which in turn will have its consequences for our town.
We need a commitment from the Mayor of RLM that refuse will be removed on schedule in the future.
We already have a situation where refuse was not removed for several weeks in Randfontein.
Please give back our money; you do not deserve it because you did not work for it.
