Mayor’s message to the women in the West Rand
Women's' Month provides an opportunity for all South Africans, men and women alike to recall an immeasurable role played by our women in sustaining and nurturing our young democracy and our country.

As the Mayor of the West Rand District Municipality, I would like to wish all the women in the West Rand a happy women’s day every day throughout the month of August.
Women’s’ Month provides an opportunity for all South Africans, men and women alike to recall an immeasurable role played by our women in sustaining and nurturing our young democracy and our country.
While this mark a time to salute our women for the role they played and continue to play, we should equally reflect on the challenges they continue to face in society which include workplace gender inequality, domestic violence and sexual harassment. Also of great concern to the West Rand District Government is the slow pace of African women empowerment at the workplace which according to the Commission on Employment Equity latest findings less than 0,8 per cent of women are said to be on the top management level.
In paying tribute to women, we need to redress this huge imbalance by speeding up women empowerment particularly when coming to the previously disadvantaged.
Despite the many challenges women still face, we can look back with pride at what this country has thus far achieved especially in the area of gender equality.
The fact that Women leaders are found in labour, government and business, this demonstrate how we have embraced women empowerment.
