Eugene takes it for Randfontein
With only one professional fight under his belt, local martial mixed artist Eugene van der Merwe went out on a limb when he challenged for the Sapmac Light Weight Muay Thai title at Silverstar Casino on 27 July.
According to Eugene, he had to face the defending champion, Jeremiah Maketha, who has been undefeated for the past 6-years.
“With only one professional fight in my career it was a true David and Goliath story. I had to train harder than ever to ensure that I would be fight-fit and ready to last five rounds against Jeremiah,” says Eugene.
After a lot of hard work and an insane training schedule, the big day arrived and Eugene was scheduled for a five round match-up with the defending Sapmac Light Weight Mauy Thai Champion.
During the opening round of this epic clash, Eugene sent Jeremiah to the canvass twice, leaving the defending champion with no answers to his attacks.
After a very tiring first round, Eugene headed to the corner and after a brief rest, came out guns blazing for round two.
A mere minute into the second round, Eugene dropped Jeremiah to the canvass for the third and final time, ensuring himself of a victory by means of technical knock out.
“I was overjoyed when I sent Jeremiah down for the third time,” says Eugene.
“I knew that it was the end of the fight and the beginning of my reign as light weight champion,” says Eugene.
“It was an overwhelming experience and I want to thank each and everyone of my friends and family members for their support and encouragement.
“Also, a great vote of thanks to my coach, Shihan Henk Pelser, for pushing me beyond my limits during training.
“In the end it truly paid off.
“Lastly I want to thank the Lord for this great talent.”
With a title in the show case, Eugene is ready for the future and excited about the titanic clashes that lie ahead.
