Farm School Festival brought to Randfontein

Soccer, volleyball, netball and chess just some of the sport codes.

Randfontein was home to the Farm School Festival held at the Greenhills Stadium this past weekend.

Soccer, volleyball, netball and chess were just some of the sport codes.

Our own Randfontein High School (RHS) were part of the day through giving the visiting schools a chance to play on their netball courts.

Eight school districts competed in what looked like a mock olympic games where each child walked onto the field – and chess board – carrying their respective school names high.

The intention of the day was to gather schools farm schools that are otherwise far apart from each other and that do not necessarily have the facilities Randfontein can provide at their disposal.

Sports co-ordinator Dawid Pieterse states that “the day is a great opportunity for schools to get to know each other through competing on the sports field.”

The event was inclusive of primary and high schools. Age groups from u.14 through to u.19 competed in their respective age groups. Some of the smaller competitors proved their worth in their participation along side the bigger participants.

The day was filled with competitive excitement, children had the determination of professional athletes and a hunger for a win and prestige. It was not all serious as some of the older participants in the volleyball section stopped consecutively for laughing breaks and made fun of each other’s techniques.

The schools broke for lunch and had a chance to fill up on snacks provided by Organisers from Gauteng Province. The day was ultimately a success and pupils got a chance to get to know their fellow pupils from other schools.

Lastly but certainly not least, winners were crowned on the day for each sports code. Those receiving awards were stood chest-out and proud to be a part of such a prestigious event.
