New wave of top swimmers emerge
At least 80 participants from the R'fontein area compete in 2015 RLM Swimming Gala in Mohlakeng.

A string of talented swimmers made their way to the Mohlakeng Swimming pool this past weekend for the 2015 RLM Swimming Gala.
The event saw around 80 participants eagerly compete against one another in freestyle, breast stroke, back stroke and relay events. The beautiful maintained public pool was the ideal venue for the event and even the rain stayed away long enough to complete all the heats.
Some of the schools that competed in the gala were Twelelo primary (Mohlakeng), Bulelani Primary (Mohlakeng) and Avante Primary School (Finsbury) along with other schools outside the curriculum who were also given a chance to compete.
The Randfontein Swimming Gala has been successfully hosted since its inception on 25 February 2012.
The event is used as a tool to promote social cohesion, water safety, swimming as sport and to promote an active and healthy lifestyle among children in the Randfontein communities.
It also creates a platform to assess progress made by swimmers and lifeguards during the Learn to Swim Program conducted seasonally at the Mohlakeng and Finsbury swimming pools.
The swimming gala has over the past years received great support from the Inter Governmental stakeholders, community members and Randfontein Sports Council thus making it a very successfully developmental program. As per service agreement between the Department of Education, Swim South Africa, Central Gauteng Aquatics and the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, scholars from nearby schools were given the opportunity to partake in the water safety and learn to swim program.
The identified schools were Tswelelo, Bulelani and Avante, from grade one to grade three. The program however is also extended to a wider target market after schooling hours as part of the club development program being conducted at the above-mentioned swimming pools.
Medal winners on the day are:
• Freestyle: Dumisane Simamane (9), Kgomotso Moloto (11), Sbusiso Simamane (13), Tiisetso Edwards (13) and Boitshepo Sekgobela (9).
