Four Stars crowned Easter champs

Local team from Randfontein praises captain and goalie in grueling 3-0 penalty shootout win against the defending champs.

Sibusiso Sithole, goalkeeper and captain of Four Stars (Mohlakeng) soccer team, led from the front as his side beat Munsieville Magicians in a grueling penalty shootout to win the Greater Randfontein Easter Soccer Tournament (Grest) held in Mohlakeng last month.

The match, which finished 0-0 after normal time, had to end in a penalty shootout.

Sibusiso, also known as Chuku, performed heroics during the shootout, saving all three shots whereas his opponent, Thembinkosi Mbiyose of Magicians – also goalie and captain – let it slip through goal after goal. Four Stars won 3-0, leaving the Magicians, the defending champions, with their hands on their hips.

There also was some drama when the Magicians had a gripe with the referee, as they suspected one-sided judgement for the Mohlakeng-based team. This led to a standstill 28 minutes into the first half. The Magicians did not even attend the award ceremony.

Two former Black Leopard players, Karabo Tshepe and Sandile Leping, also were among the Four Stars team.

For his performance, Sandile Leping earned himself the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament Award. Sandile once earned a national cap in the Bafana Bafana feeder team, better known as Amabinne Plaas.

Karabo, also known as Stitch by his fans and peers, was once again at his best and dazzled the opposition with soccer skills much to the delight of the local fans.

The tournament was graced by the presence of Oupa Ace Manyisa, Orlando Pirates player, who also donated a kit to the winners, as well as Randfontein Executive Mayor Mzi Khumalo, who handed over the winning trophy and medals.

The Grest was dedicated to the late soccer legend, Patrick Ace Ntsoelengoe – Kaizer Chiefs midfield maestro. The mayor announced that the Mohlakeng Stadium as well as Ralerata Street, Mohlakeng’s main street, will be named after him.

Thato Ntsoelengoe, Patrick’s widow also attended the event.
