West Rand boxers go toe to toe

A day of thrilling entertainment took place at the Randgate Boxing Club as many local talents went head to head with challenges.

Boxers from across the West Rand went toe to toe in the ring during a West Rand District Boxing Organisation event recently held at Randgate Boxing Club.

The main event was between Donell Kloupas from Randgate Boxing Club and Salvadore Vanicela from Bekkersdal Boxing Club in the senior men’s 60kg category. Both boxers displayed sheer boxing skill in all three rounds, however, Donell convincingly won by a 3–0 decision.

β€œIt was indeed a tough call but it was in round two when the guy hit me with the one shot that made me feel like I would lose the fight. In round three I had to take advantage of his lack of stamina,” said Donell who ended the match as the winner of the 60kg bout which can be seen as the most entertaining match throughout the event.

Then, Dimpho Morokane from Mohlakeng Boxing Club convincingly beat Zian Smit from the Vikings in the 25kg bout. Osego Dunjana from Bekkersdal won the junior 50kg category with a 2–1 outcome against Ethan Marx from Vikings. Aviwe Sontekwa from Kagiso proved to be too good for local boy Ruhan de Lange who lost 2–1.

β€œMost of the fights could not be scored outright as we had many first-time novices which also bode well for the development,” said veteran boxer and coach from Randgate Boxing Club, Willie Gonsalves.

Other results include the Mogale City 54kg bout between Kian Otto from Vikings retiring in the first round against Jordan Lombaard from Krugersdorp West while Tyron Liebenberg from Protearif threw in the towel less than a minute into the 54kg bout match which was then won by Keathlon Steyn, also from Krugersdorp West.

Donnell Kloupas is the winner of the seniors 60kg bout after his win against Salvadore Vanicela from Bekkersdal.

Two female boxers were declared as a ‘show bout’ where Karlien Wilken from Randgate and Cameron Coljee from Krugersdorp West were both declared winners in the female 32kg. Another female bout involved Annelien Wilken against Jo-Lee Van Tonder from Vikings.

Another no-contest encounter was the 64kg bout between local Jan-Hendrik Smith against Shane du Plooy from Vikings and also Mario Makhubele and Thamsanqa Ngqimbana from Kagiso.
