Community of runners gather for 5km club run
The Mohlakeng Athletics Club hosted a one-of-a-kind club run to encourage wellness in the community.
Mohlakeng Athletics Club (MAC) hosted their first 5km Club Run at the Patrick Ace Ntsoelengoe Stadium recently.
“This event is the brainchild of the Gauteng Department of Sports, Art, Culture and Recreation to encourage mass participation to take part in sporting activities in communities and also enhance a sense of wellness in societies. This will encourage social cohesion,” said club chairperson Nthabiseng Nkosi. He is also a Central Gauteng Athletics Cross Country Commission member and co-ordinator at the Department of Sports, Art and Culture.

“There was not a very large number of athletes who participated, and like we would have wanted, but we are happy to have hosted the event, all went well,” added club coach Tshepo Mgwahleka.
“Another series will be hosted on March 1, and we would like to call on all running or athletic clubs to join. Also, we would like schools to join us for the big Recreational Day. We have included aerobics in the series,” Nthabiseng said.

As far as results are concerned, Mahlomola Khanye crossed the finish line first with a time of 17 minutes and eight seconds, followed by MAC teammate Tlhalefang Mokasi with a time of 17 minutes and nine seconds. Third was Walter Mabote from Colossus Athletics Club with a time of 19 minutes and 18 seconds, while Kefilwe Molefe, also from Colossus, was the first woman to cross the finish line in a time of 22 minutes and 53 seconds. Mpho Phungwayo, also from MAC, was the second woman home with a time of 27 minutes and 38 seconds.
