West Rand learners ready for Wednesday Games

West Rand schools are gearing up to showcase their talent in soccer, volleyball and netball as the Gauteng Schools Wednesday League kicks off.

Local high schools joined the Gauteng Schools Wednesday League, a new initiative launched on September 3 at the Kagiso Memorial and Recreation Centre.

The league aims to promote sporting opportunities while encouraging excellence through collaboration between education and sport.

“It takes a village to raise a child; it also takes structures to make sport a reality,” the D2 Gauteng West Education Department Sports co-ordinator, Danton Viljoen, said.

In a keynote address, the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation’s acting chief director, Philasande Muvevi, made a call for community participation in order to give participants the courage to go for glory.

Marius Venter from the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts and Culture gives a vote of thanks.

“We also call on parental participation to give children an extra yell to do more,” she said. “It starts here before the big leagues. It takes excellence to be seen,” Muvevi explained.

The Gauteng high schools will take part in three sporting codes, namely soccer, volleyball and netball. Rand West City schools that are expected to go all the way in the league include Lukhanyo High School, the defending champs in volleyball, as well as Randfontein High School’s girls’ soccer and Phahama Secondary School’s netball.
