Local football seniors dribble to success
The Rand West City Soccer Masters has proven its football mastery after qualifying to represent Gauteng at the South African Golden Games in Cape Town.
Randfontein’s elderly football stars proved more determined than ever at the recent Gauteng Golden Games.
The sporting event took place at the Vaal University of Technology in Vanderbijlpark.
The Rand West City Soccer Masters opened their campaign with an 8–0 victory over hosts Sedibeng. Their second game, against Ekurhuleni Football Club, was nerve-wracking, but Randfontein approached it with determination.
Coach Mebra Tshabalala said the plan was to unsettle the opposition from the first whistle. Charlie Kitims scored within the opening minutes, and Velaphi “Rasta” Mbowabe added a second just 11 minutes into the second half, sealing a 2–0 win.

“The intent was to create less space and free rein for Ekurhuleni and to play as a unit by also not staying too much to pile up more pressure,” said Tshabalala.
The presence of former Orlando Pirates and Bloemfontein Celtic legend James “Killer” Mkhwanazi, playing for the Joburg Central team made up of Soweto players, was not enough to stop Randfontein’s old warhorses, who won 4–0.
Their final match against Tshwane North ended in a 0–0 draw. Randfontein’s seniors have now secured their place representing the West Rand and Gauteng at the South African Golden Games in Cape Town.
