No joke: Randfontein man trains his jaw for slap fighting success

Randfontein now has a local slap fighter ready to fight his way to the podium and claim the super heavyweight title.

Travis MacGregor (39) is introducing a unique sport to Randfontein, aiming to become the hardest-hitting slapper.

He became interested in slap fighting in March after watching Punisher Slap Fight #12 on YouTube, which inspired him to try the sport.

According to Travis, slap fighting is a contest where two opponents slap each other to see who can stand the longest.

“I wanted to challenge myself, and coming from Johannesburg South, I know we South boys are tough,” he said.

When Travis first announced his interest in competing, his family was concerned. His parents questioned his decision and feared for his safety, but his wife, four children and three friends supported him from the start.

Travis explained that slap fighters must train their jaw and neck muscles to withstand the force of an opponent’s slap.

He described his first match as nerve-racking. Although he missed with his opening slap, he recovered, gave his best and went on to win his first gold medal – his proudest moment so far.

During a match, Travis said, delivering a powerful slap requires biting down as hard as possible, while receiving one requires inhaling and bracing for impact. He added that controlled breathing improves power, speed and rhythm.

For mental preparation, Travis stays focused and avoids energy drinks. Common injuries in the sport include broken noses and jaws, burst eardrums and knocked-out teeth, though he has only suffered minor facial injuries.

“In the moments before the match, the only thing going through my mind is: walk in, knock out and walk out. Deciding how hard to hit the opponent can best be described as ‘kill or be killed’,” he said.

Besides slap fighting, Travis has extensive boxing experience, having competed for 14 years.

His next fight is scheduled for November 29 at Carnival City, where he will face Dewalt Nagel in the super heavyweight Punisher Slap Fight #15. With the support of his coach and mentors, Travis is determined to climb the ranks and claim the super heavyweight title.

He is also seeking sponsors for the upcoming match. Anyone interested can contact him at 076 986 7874.
