Young fighter works her way to boxing success
She may be young, but 15-year-old Marcia Mbongwa is proving that discipline and passion can power any boxer to greatness.
At just 15 years old, Marcia Mbongwa is proving that discipline, focus and passion can outweigh age as she boxes her way to the top.
Marcia has been boxing for two years at the Randgate Boxing Club. Before she started boxing in 2023, she often walked past the club and noticed a poster advertising boxing classes. Living nearby, curiosity got the better of her, and she finally decided to join.
“I immediately found peace when I began boxing,” she said.
Since then, Marcia has participated in four tournaments, losing only one. Her training sessions usually include running, skipping rope, practising on a punching bag and sparring with other boxers. She trains four days a week.
She explained that boxing has sharpened her discipline, which she believes is an essential skill to help the youth flourish. While boxing, her speed and stealth have dramatically improved. Her biggest motivation is fitness, as she enjoys maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Besides being consistent with training and staying in shape, Marcia looks up to Mike Tyson, the former American professional boxer, as her inspiration to keep improving.
“It is important for boxers, or anyone trying to improve in what they do, to know you don’t have to be perfect. You can always learn to improve rather than trying to be perfect,” she advised.
