Mayor joins community for Breast Cancer Awareness Walk
The annual Arebueng Cancer Walk attracted many supporters, including Rand West City Mayor William Matsheke, who appeared eager to get active and embrace fitness.
Mohlakeng’s streets came alive with pink and white as crowds gathered to take part in the 8km 4th Annual Arebueng Cancer Walk, held in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October.
Rand West City Mayor, William Matsheke, joined the masses in this massive campaign, which started in Extension 4, Bambo Novela Park. Thereafter, Matsheke also participated in a one-hour aerobics session conducted by fitness instructor Andrew Vusi Mathiya.

Sfiso Dikana, MMC for Roads at West Rand District Municipality, joined the mayor, as well as former Mamelodi Sundowns player Thuso Phala. The legendary Afro Pop and Soul artist Blondie Makehene also joined the masses to support the battle against cancer.

“This campaign is to lobby both the national and provincial government for an oncology centre on the West Rand. It is a challenge for our people in the Rand West and West Rand to travel for treatment to hospitals like Baragwanath and Charlotte Maxeke hospitals. It is not only financially taxing, but physically straining to wake up early in the morning and attend treatment for various forms of cancers,” said Nozi Mapena, founder and chairperson of Arebueng.

Cancer survivor Mamosa Khoadi, who also took part in the walk, said they did have cancer walk events in the past at Greenhills Stadium, but this one was indeed a resounding success.
“I only discovered in May this year that I have cancer, and it is genetic from my father. At first, it was devastating, but I have since learned to live with it,” she said.
