Mayor unveils new R33m sports facility
Mayor Matsheke marked World Aids Day and celebrated the opening of the new Finsbury Sports Complex with the community.
While the mayor of Rand West City, William Matsheke, joined the community for a 4km fun walk to commemorate World Aids Day, he also officially opened the Finsbury Sports Complex.
Matsheke, along with council speaker Selinah Moumakwe, Chief Whip Mkhuseli Jokazi and other councillors, planted trees as a symbol of unity before unveiling a plaque to mark the occasion.

He urged the community not to express frustration during service delivery protests by damaging or looting the facility. While he welcomed the long-awaited opening, he also voiced concern about the waterlogged soccer pitch, noting the poor drainage on both the mini-soccer field and the main ground.
“It’s been a long time waiting for this complex to open. We aim to build high-quality facilities, but we cannot accept a R33 million field with a poor drainage system,” he said.

He further urged residents to take the HIV/ Aids pandemic seriously by getting tested and avoiding risky behaviours.
Residents Magogodi Molefe and Sarah Moloto, both passionate tennis players, said they were excited to finally have a facility like this available.

“This will help develop tennis for the younger generation,” Moloto said.
Former Moroka Swallows coach and pastor, Noble Maja, also welcomed the complex.
“This will help develop soccer in the community and train young, upcoming athletes,” he said.
