Marathon master at 74
At 74, Michael Botha proves that determination and passion can overcome any challenge, completing multiple marathons in 2025.
Despite facing numerous challenges, 74-year-old Michael Botha ended 2025 on a high note by completing multiple marathons.
Originally from Kimberley, Michael moved to Johannesburg at 18. After living in Edenvale for a time, he relocated to Soweto. It was only after moving to Springs that his life goals became clear.
“It was there that I finally found faith and converted to Christianity. In that small room, the Lord touched my soul and gave me a new perspective in life,” Michael explained.
He married his wife on December 3, 1977, and they have three children. The family has since settled in Toekomsrus.
One day, while on a prayer walk around Toekomsrus, he felt inspired to become fitter.
“Eventually, my son-in-law registered me for a marathon, and from there the bug bit me,” he said.
Michael competed in several events in 2025, including:
• Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run
• Absa Run Your City Series 10km
• Rand Water Vaal River City Marathon 42km (clocking four hours 29 minutes on Heritage Day)
• Diamonds and Dorings Kimberley Big Hole Marathon
During the year, Michael received news that his brother had fallen ill. He immediately travelled to Kimberley to share his marathon goals with him. His brother, a former football striker, had always been active in sports. Sadly, Michael’s brother passed away in October.
“If you want to achieve your goals, you have to stay committed, disciplined, and realise your true potential. To master your circumstances is beneficial,” Michael reflected.
He plans to continue running marathons throughout 2026.
