New club, bright future

Despite being a newly formed club, Eagles United are already making moves and bringing home the gold.

Eagles United’s U15 soccer team recently made history by winning both the league tournament and the league title, leaving their hearts on the field.

Chairperson Eugene Malgas said achieving a double win in one season is history in the making for the team.
“They are still fairly young, and not many teams win a double, especially not teams that were only founded recently. I am very proud of the boys and look forward to even greater things.”

He added that the players themselves are extremely happy, as this is their first major win. In preparation for the tournament, the team practised three times a week, sharing the field with four other soccer teams, which limited space for drills and game planning.

Eugene explained that the next step for the players is to gain more exposure and participate in trials for elite leagues, hoping they will be noticed and given the chance to showcase their skills.

“There are some boys who are very talented, and I believe they can make it at the highest level,” he said.

Eagles United was founded in 2023 by Eugene and his son, Ryan.

“I’ve always had a love and passion for soccer. The inspiration for starting the club came when I saw a group of youngsters playing soccer in the street while others were just sitting around. I said to myself I need to do something – I need to form a club and take the children off the streets and away from trouble,” Eugene explained.

The club will host trials for new players on Saturday, January 24, at Randfontein Secondary School’s sports grounds for those interested in joining.
