Randfontein snatch victory to spoil Northam Rhino’s dominant day
Randfontein’s first team salvaged pride with a thrilling win, denying Northam a clean sweep on home turf.
Randfontein Rugby Club’s first team kicked off their Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) Grand Challenge campaign on a victorious note this past weekend, delivering a spirited performance to defeat Northam Rhinos in a thrilling home encounter.
Considered the highlight of the day, Randfontein rose to the occasion in front of their home supporters. In a tightly contested battle, both sides exchanged tries and momentum throughout the match. Randfontein showed resilience under pressure and held off a late surge from Northam to secure a hard-fought 31–26 victory, preventing a clean sweep by the visitors.

As was the case across the other senior fixtures, Northam’s third team delivered a dominant performance, claiming a 36–0 victory through structured play and clinical finishing, leaving Randfontein struggling to gain momentum.

Northam continued their strong showing in the second team match, defeating Randfontein 34–14. Although the hosts produced a more spirited performance, the Rhinos maintained control for most of the game and capitalised on key opportunities to extend their lead.

Earlier in the day, the U21 side travelled to face Diggers Rugby Club at their home ground in Randburg, where they went down 29–7 despite a determined effort. The home side controlled the pace of the game and made full use of their scoring opportunities.
The Teine U19 side had a bye.

The results meant honours were shared, with Northam Rhinos winning two of the three senior matches, while Randfontein’s first team delivered when it mattered most to give the home crowd something to celebrate.
Randfontein now turn their attention to the next round of league fixtures, where it will host rivals Raiders Rugby Club at the House of Pain on April 18, with all junior and senior teams set to be in action.
