Two arrested for robbing east professor

The 61-year-old professor was assaulted and robbed in his home.

Two men were arrested for robbing a university professor at his Muckleneuck home on Tuesday evening.

A sense of dedication, commitment and heightened awareness led to the arrest of two men who were allegedly involved in the robbery and assault of a 61-year-old professor, said Sunnyside police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela.

The suspects were said to have walked into the house through an open door which the victim had left open for ventilation, he said.

“One of the suspects (19), who could have been mistaken for a homeless person, received a rude awakening when he was caught napping shortly after 01:00 in Justice Mohammed Street,” Mavimbela said.

“It was soon established that his alleged accomplices had driven away and left him behind when they fled the robbery scene.”

Mavimbela said the second suspect was caught by officers near Sunnyside Shoprite on Wednesday morning.

“The suspect was reportedly found in possession of some of the items that fitted the description of some of the property stolen from the professor,” he said.

A laptop, bank cards, about R5 000, believed to have been withdrawn from the victim’s bank account and bottles of whiskey were among the items recovered during the arrests.

Sunnyside police commended the officers for bringing the suspects to book within a short space of time.

“The suspects will be charged with house robbery and possession of suspected stolen property. They are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon,” Mavimbela said.
