NEWSFLASH: Motorist caught in cross fire during Silverton cash in transit heist

A bystander was killed by a stray bullet during a shootout between security and robbers.

A motorist was killed when a stray bullet struck him in the head during a cash-in-transit heist in Silverton in the east of Pretoria on Saturday morning.

The incident took place in Silverton at Alwyn Street corner of Battery Crescent in Waltloo around 11:20, according to police spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili.

 “A cash van was stopped by unknown suspects driving an old model Mercedes,” she said.

“The suspects shot at the cash van and rammed into it.”

She said the robbers forced the security out of the cash van and took an undisclosed amount of money.

“They set the Mercedes alight and left the scene in a black BMW and blue Ford Ranger.”

A security company vehicle arrived at the scene and exchanged fire with the robbers and a motorist was hit in the head by a stray bullet and died on the scene.

The robbers managed to flee.

Muridili said the deceased is believed to be a man from Mamelodi East whose identity is withheld until family has been notified.
