As part of the #SwitchOnTshwane campaign, MMC for Utility Services, Frans Boshielo, recently announced the successful implementation of 20 newly installed streetlights in Ward 51 and a high-mast light in Ward 3.
The campaign, initiated by the MMC via the Energy and Electricity Business Unit (EEBU) since taking office, has sought to bring the main benefits of improved lighting to communities across the metro.
Among the benefits of the campaign are the safety improvements that a refurbished lighting infrastructure brings by being a crime deterrent, improved visibility for pedestrians, motorists and residents, and employment opportunities for locals.
The 20 new streetlights were installed along Monoa and Maunde streets in Atteridgeville, and the high-mast light was installed at the corner of Kruisbessie Avenue and Mica Street in Proclamation Hill.
“The city remains committed to investing in infrastructure that improves the quality of life of our residents. The energisation of these streetlights and the high-mast light demonstrates our determination to deliver practical solutions that enhance safety, support economic activity and strengthen public infrastructure in our communities,” Boshielo said.
Seven residents from Ward 51 and three from Ward 3 were employed by the metro to assist in the implementation of the project.
Also in attendance at the completion of the project was the Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya, who said that the EEBU’s efforts are a testament to their commitment to bringing the same service to communities all over the metro.
“We conducted an oversight visit to inspect the repair of streetlights along Madiba Street and Government Avenue in Arcadia. Several streetlights have been restored following acts of vandalism and the theft of electrical cables. This forms part of our EEBU’s efforts to illuminate Tshwane’s streets. We are committed to improving visibility and enhancing public safety for residents, commuters, and visitors,” Moya said.
