Mama Afrika pageant takes centre stage
The Mama Afrika pageant aims at promoting full-figured women.
Fa’Trez Lodge hosted the fourth annual Mama Afrika pageant on Saturday afternoon in Faerie Glen.
Mama Afrika is a pageant that promotes full-figured women. It was introduced in 2013 when Veronica van der Neut was crowned the inaugural Mama Afrika queen.
This year Michelle Stone was crowned the 2016 Mama Afrika queen while Louwna Maleka was crowned the Mama Africa junior queen.
The event started with a photo-shoot where models showed off wedding gowns and different attires.
Face of Mama Africa Connie Nkone Mokoele said the event was a success despite a smaller turnout.
“Everything went according to plan. I expected a lot of people to show up this afternoon but only a few did. The pageant was fabulous as we crowned our new Mama Africa queen. We also introduced the Mama Africa junior queen,” she said.
Fa’Trez manager Fatima Mostert said the pageant has generally contributed a lot.
“I’ve been involved in beauty pageants for many years, I even took part in the 2004 Miss SA. I knew it was going to be a great initiative when Connie told me about the idea of starting Mama Afrika.”
