Metro finally cleans dump

Residents' complaining has finally paid off and illegal dumping was seized thanks to the quick response from the metro.

The notorious illegal dumping site on the corner of Cussonia Avenue and Pretoria Street has been cleaned up by the Tshwane metro Waste Management department, while metro police has committed to patrolling the area to prevent a repeat of the situation.

According to Senior Superintendent Andre van der Walt of the metro police, it was discovered that vagrants had also settled on the property because an increasing number of unscrupulous dumpers were dumping reusable materials on the open veld – a great attraction for vagrants. Goods such as broken fridges, home furniture and even old blankets were dumped as well as building rubble and other rubbish.

Several readers contacted Rekord about the unsightly situation in the area, especially because it is situated near one of Pretoria’s biggest eco-attractions. They said huge trucks were openly dumping at the site and that for several weeks nothing had been done to bring the illegal actions to a halt.

Furthermore, Van der Walt said that visible patrols would continue in an effort to nab illegal dumpers who continued with illegal dumping activities.

“The department will continue with crime prevention operations with the police and other role players until the situation is normal. Seeing as this area is not cordoned off by palisade fencing, I foresee that we will deal with the same problem again.”

Ward Councillor Duncan Baker praised the metro for the decisive action and the dedicated clean-up. “I was very happy to hear that there was going to be a clean-up. The veld is right opposite the National Botanical Gardens, and the situation was therefore quite absurd. I do, however, suggest that a trench be dug to prevent the illegal dumpers from returning to this spot. I also welcome the announcement of more metro police patrols in the area. Only metro police officers can take legal action against illegal dumpers. We must prevent this situation from happening again,” Baker told Rekord.
