Underwater braai a success
Braaiing has long since been a tradition in South Africa, but Braai Boy is taking this favourite pastime to new heights.
Inspired by the cartoon animation Spongebob Squarepants, Gareth Daniell finally put his idea to the test by having a braai underwater at Ridgeback Village in Lyttelton on Saturday.
Better known as Braai Boy, he said this was another attempt to take braaiing to a new level and that his braai set-up was open at the bottom, like an upside down aquarium with all the equipment being submerged.
Braai Boy said he had thought of doing something weird for a long time, and after months of practice, he finally decided to turn this idea into reality. After being able to stay underwater for three hours, one minute and forty seconds, he knew his idea was ready to become a reality.
Joined by a professional diver, Dawie ‘Duik’ Schlebusch, the braai took place in a swimming pool. “Compressed air was supplied from seven 12l cylinders.
The pressure of the air from the cylinders kept the water out of the glass case and fed the fire.
The wood, coal, firelighters and meat were carried through the water in Ziplock bags.
One of the managers at Ridgeback Village, Tamsen Wade, said this was an experience of a lifetime and that the most important thing was that the whole experience was for a good cause, since the money raised went to charity.
“It was a beautiful experience for the residents as well because the day turned into a fun day for all those who attended.”
A video of the braai will be sent to the Guinness World Records organisation in the next two weeks.
