Pretoria East’s poor helped

A generous donation from the Atterbury Value Mart will assist the Pharos community greatly in providing for the needy in the eastern suburbs of Pretoria.

Donations from the Atterbury Value Mart’s recent Spring Queen pageant have reached the Pharos Community Centre in the east of Pretoria. The donation of non-perishable goods will be distributed among needy families living in the eastern suburbs. According to Johan Taute of the centre, the need in the east is just as great as in the more traditionally poorer parts of the metro.

“Pharos is a centre dedicated to assisting families who find themselves in desperate situations. All it takes is for one person in a family to lose their job and things can very quickly become dire. We offer assistance through various projects. We help people find employment, assist with urgent legal and medical matters and even monetary matters, if possible. We offer these services because the volunteers and friends of Pharos want to help others.”

Danie de Beer of Atterbury Value Mart said it was a privilege to be in a position to assist non-profit organisations such as Pharos. “The centre plays the role of a middle man. We offered a platform for residents who wanted to help their fellow community members but were unsure of where to go or what to do. Atterbury Value Mart is happy to have been able to make this donation, which will help families in need,” he told Rekord.

Ward Councillor Karen Meyer said the need in the east of Pretoria was greater than many people realised. “The east is perceived as the home of the more affluent suburbs, yet, even here there are families struggling to stay afloat. Through donations like these and centres to assist families, we are looking after our communities.”
