Over 500 members of the South African Waste Pickers’ Association from around Gauteng took to the streets of the inner city last Friday to demand that the government place a complete ban on incineration in South Africa.
The march started at the old Putco Bus Deport in Marabastad and proceeded to Princess Park, where protesters handed over their memorandum to the Department of Environmental Affairs before going back to Marabastad, where the march ended.
Protesters believed that waste incinerators would lead to job loss for those working at dump sites, which would result in their families going hungry and becoming destitute.
