Police officers to appear in court for Chana shooting

The Independent Police Investigations Directorate said on Monday that two police officers will be charged with attempted murder for the shooting of hip-hop star, Khuli Chana.

Two police officers will be facing charges of attempted murder for the mistaken shooting of hip hop star, Khuli Chana, the Independent Police Investigations Directorate (IPID) said on Monday.

“They will not be arrested but will be summoned. They will appear at the Randburg Magistrate Court on 18 February,” said IPID spokesperson, Moses Dlamini.

Chana, whose real name is Khulane Morule, sustained wounds and injuries after he was shot in Midrand by police officers who mistook him for a kidnapper in October.

It was later discovered that the kidnapper, who abducted a Bedfordview man, was a police officer from Silverton Pretoria and was later arrested for kidnapping and house-breaking.

However, in November, Chana was then charged with attempted murder by the police, after police obtained CCTV footage showing Chana trying to run over a uniformed police officer during the incident of his shooting.

“The evidence obtained corroborates the claim of police officers at the scene that instead of stopping, the driver of the BMW (Chana), tried to run over the uniformed police officers who flagged him to stop. That investigation is still on going,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Neville Malila.
