Police officer in critical condition

Two police officers were involved in a serious vehicle accident while they were in pursuit of an alleged armed robbery suspect.

A police officer is still in a serious but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Unitas Hospital after being involved in a vehicle accident on Sunday morning.

Constable Nicholas Nkome lost control of his vehicle while in pursuit of an alleged suspect involved in a possible armed robbery.

The officer’s companion also sustained serious injuries, but was discharged on Monday.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale, the two police officers reported to a fight between two men over an iPad at a fuel station near Blue Valley Mall on Sunday morning 10:45. One of the offenders fled with the iPad tablet as the police approached the scene. The man was allegedly on his way to Kwazulu-Natal, but stopped at the fuel station. It is not clear whether he stole the tablet.

As the police chased after him, the driver of the vehicle lost control, possibly due to sand on the road. The vehicle rolled over to the side of the road, coming to a stop on the passenger’s side. Nkome’s left lung collapsed, he broke seven ribs and sustained a skull fracture, among other injuries. Nkome’s partner sustained less serious injuries. They were both attended to at the scene and immediately rushed to the hospital.
