Robbed in their home

A man and his wife were held up at gunpoint while robbers raided their home. The experience has been traumatising for them, and they plan on moving out of the area.

Four gunmen fled with R350 000’s worth of cash and valuables after holding a couple up at gunpoint in their house in Amandasig late last week. According to police, this is the second robbery in the span of a week.

Rufus Lodi, who was assaulted twice with the robbers’ weapon, said he and his wife, Mabel Mmakola, were shocked when the four men entered their home.

“I work from home and was busy in my office when the four men came in. They held us up at gunpoint and tied our hands in the bedroom.”

Lodi said his wife was scared and cried throughout the ordeal. The gunmen assaulted him while carelessly laughing and snooping through their valuables.

“One of the robbers hit me over the head twice and insisted that I open the safe. I crawled to the safe and one of the robbers continuously instructed me not to look at him.”

When the robbers left, Lodi broke the cables and called for help next door. He claimed that the robbers left with at least R350 000’s worth of cash and valuables. According to Lodi, his family is traumatised and planned to move soon. “Our world has changed and we cannot continue to live here. We’ve got two small children to keep safe.”

Riana van Aarde, the Akasia police spokesperson, said the suspects were still on the loose and the police were busy with investigations. She also confirmed that another case in the same area was reported just days before. Van Aarde warned that people should be vigilant and keep their homes and themselves safe.

She said having a close relationship with one’s neighbours could safe one’s life. “People should always get to know their neighbours. When you are being attacked, it is good to have a helping hand from next door.”
