‘Prophets’ scam Sunnyside

The Sunnyside police are warning the public of bogus prophets operating in the area after a man was recently robbed of his valuables on the corner of Troy and Park streets.

The Sunnyside police are warning residents to be aware of fake prophets operating in the area after two conmen stole a 23-year-old man’s laptop, cell phone and money. The incident occurred on the corner of Troy and Park streets on Tuesday.

According to the police, the two bogus prophets pretended to ask the man for directions before telling him about the dangers he faced. The men offered to help him when he suddenly started to feel dizzy. He later realised that his property and money had been stolen and opened a case of theft at the Sunnyside police station.

Constable Adolph Chiloane urged residents not to allow people who claimed to be prophets to speak to them or pray for them.

Sunnyside is also experiencing an increase in theft out of motor vehicles, smash-and-grabs, theft and robbery.

The police conduct regular operations to fight these crimes and ask that residents work together with them to make Sunnyside a safer place.
