Police seeking suspects after horrific Sunnyside hijack

Police are still seeking three suspects on charges of hijacking after a 33-year-old Midrand man was hijacked of his BMW in Sunnyside, police said on Monday.

Three suspects are still at large after Midrand resident, Nyiko Mabunda was hijacked and thrown into his boot for several hours in Sunnyside. “No arrests have been made. The case is being handled by the Vehicle Safeguarding Unit as a case of hijacking has been opened,” said police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach.

Mabunda had been sitting in his BMW 520i with a friend at the corners of Leyds Street and Plein Street Sunnyside at about 20:00 last week Wednesday, when he was approached by three armed men. “These men started shouting ‘Voetsek! Voetsek!’. They pulled us out of the front seats and we were violently thrown into the back seats. They took my iPad, laptop, my ID, my driver’s licence and requested my bank card and my PIN,” he said.

After several kilometres, Mabunda and his friend were then removed and shoved into the boot of his car. “I heard them say they will remove the tracker from my car and they kept referring to a ‘Neo’, who could help them find the tracker. After a while, we were then removed from my boot and into the boot of another car. It all happened so suddenly but I noticed there were a lot more men than before. That is when I realised this could be a syndicate,” said Mabunda.

Mabunda stayed in the boot for several hours while the criminals struggled to find the tracker. After several failed attempts, the suspects then dumped Mabunda and his friend in the quiet neighbourhood of Hercules. “They let us go at about 02:00. We had no idea where we were but we managed to get help and reported the case to the police. Police managed to track my car in Mamelodi, but after a few minutes, the tracker signal was lost,” he said.

“Anyone that can assist the police with information can contact the Sunnyside Police Station on 012 422 3650 or on Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” said Weilbach.
