Deadline for roadworks extended
Motorists will have to endure another month of inconvenience and frustration, as the roadworks on Nellmapius Drive have been extended.
The road works being done on Nellmapius Drive in Centurion are due to be completed by the end of June. This is the latest information received from M&T Development’s town planner, Eugene Weiss. In March, it was reported that the section between John Vorster Drive and Luton Street on Nellmapius Drive were being upgraded, and were due to be completed by the end of April. However, Weiss informed Rekord that the deadline has been extended to the end of June.
This reason for this extension has not been made known by M&T Development.
Rekord has received numerous calls in the past months from residents in Highveld complaining about the influx in traffic, which had to be rerouted through the residential area, on Logan Avenue. Heavy vehicles have also become a headache for residents, as their loads, such as building material, cause dust and smoke.
The upgrades on Nellmapius Road are part of the developer’s responsibility to manage traffic and the usage of municipal services at the future levels predicted when new developments will be fully operational.
Rekord previously reported that Paul Venter, town planner for M&T Development, said the upgrades were prescribed by the Tshwane metro due to the envisioned increase in traffic from the development at the Southdowns Ridge Office Park. “The upgrades will cater for existing background traffic as well as traffic generated by the new development,” he said.
The upgrades include a new traffic circle at the Nellmapius Drive and Luton Street intersection, which was recently completed, and the widening of Nellmapius Drive from Luton Street to John Vorster Drive, which is still underway. A new entrance from Nellmapius Drive to Southdowns Ridge Office Park, with a traffic circle, will also be built.
