Judge Thokozile Masipa has extended murder accused Oscar Pistorius’ bail until 13 October despite persecutor Gerri Nel voicing concerns that Pistorius was a flight risk. Pistorius has to return to court on 13 October for sentencing.
Judge Masipa said the state did not convince her that Pistorius was a flight risk and granted bail on the same conditions.
Nel told the court, “It would not be in the interest of justice,” to grant Pistorius bail. He said the fact that Pistorius was found guilty of a very serious crime, has sold three properties and was thrown out of a nightclub recently were sufficient grounds to deny bail.
Defence lawyer Barry Roux argued the sale of properties by Pistorius had been to cover his legal costs. Roux also pointed out while Pistorius was out on bail for a more serious charge of murder, he complied with his bail conditions.
Judge Masipa found Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide on day 43 of the Pistorius trial for shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on 14 February last year.
Judge Masipa also found Pistorius guilty on the charge of negligently discharging a firearm at Tasha’s restaurant in Melrose Arch.
She found him not guilty of the sunroof shooting and not guilty for the illegal possession of ammunition.
