Bogus carguards a concern

Sunnyside police are concerned over spate of theft-out-of-motor vehicles in the area and warn the public to remain alert.

Bogus car-guards are on the loose in Sunnyside, terrorising motorists by stealing valuables from their vehicles, Sunnyside police said.

Police revealed this to sensitise the residents about high levels of theft-out-of-motor vehicles.

“We are facing serious problems of theft-out-of-motor vehicles ,” Sunnyside police spokesperson Sergeant Asnath Malatsi said.

She said almost all parking bays under the protection of so-called car-guards in area are hot spots for this crime, where car remote jamming devices are often used to gain entry into vehicles. Malatsi said police had made several arrests to fight against this crime in Sunnyside, but it remains a challenge because a high number of culprits still roam the streets.

“I urge motorists to always make sure that their cars are properly locked before leaving them in parking bays anywhere,” she said. She said this crime is even worse in areas like shopping centres, complexes and gym centres.

According to the police, most victims of theft-out-of-motor vehicles are usually those who are not familiar with the area.

They urged residents to work with police in fighting against this crime by, among other things, reporting suspicious persons and culprits to the police. Police are doing regular stop-and-search operations to try to fight this type of crime.
