Domestic worker locked inside room during robbery

A domestic worker realised she was not alone anymore when she was busy hanging laundry and felt someone touch her shoulder.

A domestic worker in Waterkloof Ridge was locked inside a spare room at her place of work by two men, who ransacked the house and stole a plasma television and cash, police said on Thursday.

“On 23 Septemebr at 10:30 in Waterkloof Ridge, a 59 year-old domestic worker was outside the house doing laundry, she became aware that she was no longer alone when somebody touched her shoulder,” said police spokeswoman Captain Colette Weilbach.

She said the two unknown men who were unarmed, asked the domestic worker to accompany them inside the house, where they took a plasma television, jewellery and cash.

“The suspects fled and the domestic worker was unharmed.”

Weilbach said domestic workers and gardeners must take note of vehicles and people that look suspicious and out of place and report the matter to the police.

“It is important to take note of details such as colour and make of vehicle, registration number and a description of people,” said Weilbach.

She said when workers arrive at work they must check that there are no strange people or vehicles hanging around the house.

“If there are strange people, a worker must just keep on walking to prevent an ambush when the gates open.”

Weilbach said no arrests were made, and a case was opened at the Brooklyn police station.
