Police chase leads to firearm recovery

Police recovered an illegal firearm after a high speed chase in Mamelodi.

A 22-year-old man will appear at the Mamelodi Magistrates Court after an unlicensed firearm was found in his car, police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Michael Mbewe said.

Mbewe said the man was arrested after a high speed chase.

“The suspect was driving a Mazda 323 around 02:30 on Thursday morning. He accelerated when police in a marked vehicle ordered him to stop at the corner of Hector Peterson Street and Solomon Mahlangu Drive,” he said.

After the police chased him for two kilometres, the suspect was apprehended after he was cornered in Extension 11.

“Police found a pistol with filed off serial numbers attached to his waist as well as ammunition. The suspect is facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” Mbewe said.
