Be safe when visiting financial institutions and at home

Wonderboompoort police have issued a warning to be safe while visiting any financial institutions.

Be on the outlook for idle individuals purportedly queuing behind you in the bank when you are there to withdraw money, the Wonderboompoort police warned.

Spokesperson Warrant Officer Wanda Olivier said: “These suspects fill in a form for the show, stand in the row and then leave the row when a victim is marked that is withdrawing a huge amount of money.

“Some just stand around watching how long the machine counting banknotes runs in order to get an indication whether a large or small amount was being withdrawn.”

As the target drove off, the culprits would follow until the victim reached his or her destination, where the robbery would then be carried out.

“In today’s age and time, it is much safer to make use of technology. If you are a business owner, open accounts for all your employees and pay over their money via the internet, or even cellular phone banking.”

Olivier advised people to opt for paying with bank cards or via internet or cellphone banking.

It was no longer necessary to carry a huge amount of money.

“Even when you are older and not at ease using technology like this, you can be relaxed and just go to your nearest bank branch and make sure that you can use your type of bank card in such a way. You can even withdraw money at places like Pick and Pay. Withdrawing money like this is even less expensive,” Olivier said.

Should you have no choice but to withdraw large amounts of money, make sure to be on the lookout for criminals. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid going alone.

Be sure to have people with you on the lookout. Should you be followed, drive to the nearest police station.

Olivier warned people against approaching someone following them. Should you end up being held at gunpoint, give your assailants what they want without making eye contact.

“Do not make sudden movements and do not try to be a hero. A life is worth so much more than material articles and money.”
