Another man attacked in Irene

A man was nearly killed while walking in Irene.

A man was attacked and stabbed multiple times with a knife in Jan Smuts Avenue in Irene on Saturday evening.

Residents found the man lying next to the road, bleeding profusely. Johan van Greunen, found the man lying next to the road and contacted emergency services immediately.

“We contacted the ambulance services that took the man to Unitas hospital,” says Van Greunen.

This is not the first incident of this type in the area. On 14 September, a man was attacked while he was riding his bicycle, close to Jan Smuts Avenue, opposite Cornwall Hill College. The man was approached by two men, who forced him off his bicycle, tied him up, and beating him with rocks. The man was saved when two other cyclists rescued him from the assailants.

Councillor Christa Spoelstra of the Democratic Alliance, whose ward includes Irene, said people should be careful in that area. “That area is notoriously dangerous. People should not walk alone, especially at night. There is a Community Policing Forum that keeps watch over the area, but they are limited and cannot constantly patrol the area.”

“Streetlights in that area are not working due to suspected cable theft. I will raise this issue with the metro, and get it sorted out as soon as possible,” says Spoelstra.

Residents are furious about the current lack of service delivery, including non-functioning streetlights, which they blame for the attacks taking place.

“Our street is pitch dark and I am really concerned that we will have a hijacking soon as a result,” says resident Lonsdale O’Donovan.

“If any further incidents happen because of these lights, the community will hold the metro responsible.”

No suspects has been arrested in connection with the crime as yet, but Lyttelton police say they are investigating.

According to his wife, the man is currently being treated in hospital, and is in a stable condition. She said her husband went for a walk in the suburb when he was suddenly attacked by one assailant.
