Growing number of house burglaries and assaults

Mamelodi police are concerned about the growing number of house burglaries and assault in Mamelodi.

Mamelodi West police are concerned about the growing number of assaults and house burglaries reported at the police station lately.

Mamelodi West police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said: “Most of the assault cases are opened over the weekend. We are concerned because we are getting closer to the festive season and many people engage in social parties, go out a lot and even friends end up fighting over beer at shebeens and some reports are domestic violence. We want to encourage the community to drink responsibly and when they are drunk they should go home before they get into fights.”

Concerned about the growing number of house burglaries Maheso asked residents to work with police to solve these cases.

“In many cases they steal electric appliances and in order to make the police work easier residents must always keep the receipt and serial numbers of their appliances. They should report house breakings at the police station and if possible they must bring along their serial numbers and receipt of their stolen goods. This will make the police work easier and solve the case as soon as possible and the victims will find their stolen goods faster,” said Maheso.

“We have arrested many suspects in possession of stolen goods and people need to bring the serial numbers in order to identify their goods,” said Maheso.

Maheso suggested some safety tips:

  • Wait until fingerprints and statements are taken before touching anything.
  • A list of the make, model, and serial numbers of electrical appliances and other valuables should be available for investigation purposes.
  • Look out for strange footprints in the garden and point it out to the police.
