Housebreaker behind bars

An alleged housebreaker is behind bars thanks to a brave resident and quick police work.

An alleged housebreaker met his nemesis in the form of Villieria detectives when he was rearrested moments after he appeared in court on an attempted murder case.

According to Captain Coba Brits, spokesperson of the Villieria police, he will now face additional charges of attempted housebreaking and the possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.

On 29 May a Villieria resident reported an attempted break-in at his house.

He became aware of somebody trying to break into his house and he confronted the suspects, who then fled on foot and left their vehicle behind.

According to Brits, the investigating officers established the vehicle was stolen in 2012 in the Brooklyn area, fingerprints were taken on the scene and a positive identity was made.

“Constable Mokwena Majapelo showed extreme dedication in the investigation of the case. He followed up numerous leads and in the end proved to be successful when he got a breakthrough,” Brits said.

On 23 September the 31-year-old suspect from Mamelodi was arrested by Constable Majapelo at the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court, where he appeared on an attempted murder case of Mamelodi.

Brits urges the public to put their own safety first at all times and to take care when confronting criminals.

“In this instance, clear information on the suspects assisted the South African Police Service in their investigation.”

The following observation techniques can be used to give information to the police:

-Do not make it obvious that you are observing the suspects.

-How many intruders?

-Focus on one person at a time.

-Gain an overall impression first: Height, build, firearm or other weapon, clothing, special features (a limp, deformities, birthmarks, and more).

-Look at details: Facial features (round/sharp, eyes close set/wide apart, and more).

-Remember any names used by the suspects when talking to each other.

-Remember what they touched, where they walk, any cigarette butts discarded, body fluids deposited, and more.

-Vehicles (the same rules apply, overall impression first, and then the details): First look at the make and model, colour, noticeable features and registration number.
