Gropius Avenue in Lyttelton has become a crime hotspot in the past month.
Various reports of muggings have surfaced over the past month, all with the same modus operandi. Two young men hide behind the wall of the empty property at 262 Gropius Avenue, and attack you from behind when you walk past.
On 10 September Anand Thalikchand, a Centurion resident, was attacked by two men when he walked from his home to the Gautrain station, a mere 500m. The two assailants pushed him to the ground, and stole his laptop and cellphone.
“That area is notoriously dangerous, and people really do need to be cautious,” says Chris Evans, head of the Lyttelton sector 7 CPF.
“If anyone sees any suspicious activity, they must phone us and let us know on 086-157-1911,” says Evans.
The empty property is owned by the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA), who claim they do daily inspections of the property.
Tlago Ramapela, spokesperson for the GMA said: “We are currently in the final stages of obtaining 24-hour security to patrol the empty land in Gropius Avenue, but unfortunately we can’t give a specific date when this will happen, as the procurement processes have to be followed.”
Until security is provided, residents are urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
