Garsfontein police arrested three men on Thursday afternoon (9 October) who were in possession of stolen cigarettes.
Police suspect the men were involved in the robbery of a British American Tobacco delivery vehicle in Soshanguve earlier the same day.
Garsfontein police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Miller said two Garsfontein crime prevention unit police officers were patrolling when they noticed a suspicious-looking Volkswagen Kombi with a load of boxes, driving along Tambotie Avenue near the N4 highway.
The officers pulled over the vehicle and discovered the boxes contained cigarettes.
Miller said a substantial number of boxes were found inside the vehicle, but could not disclose the total number or value of the cigarettes at the time. He said the men were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property, but could possibly later be charged with armed robbery.
The officers who made the swift arrest were the same ones who recently recovered a hijacked Toyota RunX in the Garsfontein area.
