A 39-year-old woman was killed by stray bullets on Thursday morning while travelling to work in Midrand, provincial police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said.

“It is alleged that at 7:30, taxi owners were gathered at the intersection and they started throwing stones and shooting at each other. The taxi owners allegedly immediately drove away in their private vehicles as the fighting broke out. At that stage a white Toyota Tazz was passing by and the driver and passenger were hit by the stray bullets,” she said.

The bullets hit the passenger door, killing the woman in the passenger seat whithin a few minutes after she was shot in the upper body.

“The driver of the car, a 44-year-old woman, immediately made a u-turn and went to the nearest mosque to ask for help. At arrival she found that her passenger had died. The driver was taken to hospital as she was shot in the right arm,” Selepe said.

Police have launched a man-hunt to arrest the alleged killers.
