A 12-year-old pupil was allegedly stabbed to death by another pupil at a primary school in Mamelodi on Monday, the Department of Education said.
The stabbing occurred at Bula Dikgoro Primary School during school hours. Pupils on Monday returned to school after the October school holidays.
“The school immediately called an ambulance and police and paramedics declared the child dead at the scene,” spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said in a statement.
“The department will put in place an independent investigation into the circumstances of this tragic incident. Counselling and trauma debriefing will be provided by the department’s social support and pastoral care units to the family and pupils at the school.”
Sekhonyane said the department is extending its sincere condolences to the family of the pupil, teachers and fellow pupils.
