Oscar Pistorius faces sentencing
Paralympian Oscar Pistorius will be hearing his sentencing on Monday morning after he was found guilty for culpable homicide when he shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year.
The murder trial of paralympian gold medallist Oscar Pistorius will be running its final leg on Monday when the athlete will be sentenced.
Pistorius was acquitted of premeditated murder and had instead been found guilty of culpable homicide after he fired four shots through a door of a toilet cubicle, killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013.
Among three charges relating to the contravention of the Firearm Controls Act, the gold medallist was found guilty on one charge of reckless and negligent handling of a firearm in a public space.
He was found not guilty of charges of murder dolus eventualis, and charges of the discharge of a firearm through a car’s sunroof and possession of illegal ammunition.
Reeva’s parents, June and Barry Steenkamp, reportedly expressed their disappointment in the verdict, saying the culpable homicide conviction was not right.
Judge Thokozile Masipa will be announcing the sentencing. Various legal experts reportedly indicated that Pistorius might be given a less harsh sentence, ranging from house arrest, a fine, to even a suspended sentence.
