Smartphone thieves nabbed after shootout

Six smartphone thieves were stopped by police and a CopWatch officer after targeting a Vodacom store in Centurion Mall.

A Vodacom store in Centurion Mall was robbed earlier this morning, and six suspects were arrested. Lyttelton police and CopWatch worked together to apprehend the suspects. The suspects locked customers and employees into the back office, but luckily, the manager of the store had a spare key and could open the door after the robbers had fled the scene. The suspects drove off in a white Toyota Quantum minibus. Police officers chased them to Migmatite Avenue in Zwartkop.

A CopWatch officer known simply as Abner, who had gotten a call on Zello to be on the lookout for the suspects, spotted the Quantum minibus and helped police to stop the vehicle. The driver of the minibus pulled over, but started firing at police. Police returned fire and the driver as well as another suspect were shot and injured.

According to Colonel Kweza of the Gauteng SAPS, the suspects were arrested, and three firearms as well as two bags full of smartphones stolen from the store were recovered. The suspects will soon appear in court on charges of business robbery and possession of stolen property.
